PHOENICIA. Tyre. Caracalla, 198-217. Tetradrachm (Billon, 26 mm, 13.70 g, 6 h), 215-217. AYT KAI ANTWNINOC CЄ Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right. Rev. •ΔHMAPX ЄΞ YΠAT •Δ• Laureate bust of Melkart-Herakles to right, wearing lion skin draped around neck. Bellinger -, cf. Pl. XXI, 12 (same obverse die) and 14 (same reverse die). Prieur 1542 (2 examples). Extremely rare, apparently the third known example. Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine.

Clearly this issue aligns Caracalla to Melkart-Herakles: their portraits are almost identical, differing only in that the emperor wears a cuirass and a paludamentum, whereas the demigod wears his lion skin.

Starting price: 75 CHF
