| Lot description: PISIDIA, Sagalassus. Claudius II Gothicus. AD 268-270. Æ Dekassarion (35mm, 18.07 g, 11h). AV K M AVP KΛAVΔION, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / ΛAKЄΔAIMON CAΓAΛACCЄΩN, to left, the hero Lakedaimon standing left, wearing helmet and military dress, holding patera and spear; to right, Tyche standing left, wearing kalathos, crowning hero and holding cornucopia; small altar between. Unpublished in the standard references. Brown surfaces with red highlights, some smoothing in fields. Good VF. Extremely rare, apparently unpublished. The city of Sagalassus claimed a Spartan origin and direct descendance from the Dioscuri. During recent excavations at the Agora of Sagalassus, stelle with an inscription naming Lakedaimon as founder as well as the remains of the statue depicted on this coin have been found. This same scene can be found on the coins of other emperors at this city but this is the first such appearance for Claudius II. Estimate: 300 USD |  |
