Lot description:

TROAS. Abydus. Severus Alexander, 222-235. Dichalkon (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.69 g, 6 h). AYK MA C AΛΕΞΔN (blundered and partially illegible) Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander to right. Rev. ABYΔH/NΩN Two bull's heads back to back. Cf. BMC 64 and note (stags heads). Cf. SNG Munich 35 (uncertain emperor). Green patina. Good very fine.

An unusual depiction of two bull's heads back to back on the reverse, the BMC refers to them as stags while noting that other examples had been identified as bulls. The curved horns are, however, clearly not a stag's antlers.

Starting Price: 50 CHF
