Lot description:

THRACE. Byzantium. Tiberius, 14-37. Hemiassarion (Bronze, 16 mm, 3.03 g, 12 h). TIBEPIOC KAI CEBACTO[C] Laureate head of Tiberius to right. Rev. Six-pointed star within crescent. RPC -. Schönert-Geiss - (but cf. 1315-7 of Domitian, which shares the same rev. type and is similar in style). Seemingly unpublished. Dark green patina. Roughness on reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

The attribution to Byzantium is by no means certain: the large bronze denomination of Tiberius from that mint exhibits a highly refined engraving style, and furthermore it does not employ the lunate Σ as seen on this coin. However, the reverse of a six-pointed star within crescent is found on small bronzes of Domitian that share a similar style and also the lunate Σ.
