Egypt, Alexandria. Antoninus Pius. A.D. 138-161. Æ drachm (30 mm, 19.75 g, 12 h). RY 24 (A.D. 160/1). Laureate and draped bust of Antoninus Pius right / Ram standing right, wearing hem-hem crown; altar to right; above, bust of Serapis to right; across field, date (L K-Δ). Köln 1857; Dattari (Savio) 2834; Kampmann & Ganschow -. Green patina with some brown, minor roughness. Nearly very fine.

Ex Léon Lacroix Collection.

Léon Lacroix (1909-2016) was a Belgian numismatist who earned his doctorate in philology from the University of Liège at the young age of 23. He subsequently studied in Paris under the French numismatists Charles Picard and Louis Robert. In 1951 he became a professor of Greek archaeology and art history at University of Liège, where he remained until his retirement in 1980. He also served as vice president of the Société royale de Numismatique de Belgique from 1961 to 1967. Prof. Lacroix was a prolific author on numismatic topics, but is perhaps best known for Les reproductions de statues sur les monnaies grecques: la statuaire archaïque et classique (Liège, 1949).
