Lot description:

PISIDIA. Pogla. Philip II, 247-249. Hexassarion (?) (Orichalcum, 36 mm, 28.67 g, 12 h). •AY•KAI•MAP•IOY•ΦΙΛΙΠΠOC•ЄY•CЄB• Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip II to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΠΩΓΛЄΩΝ Distyle aedicula; within, cult statue of Artemis Pergaia, wearing polos, its body decorated with eight figures in two bands; to lower left and right, a bird standing on small cippus; stars in upper left and right fields; on the capitals, two Nikai, facing inwards; in exergue, wreath. BMC 8 = Von Aulock, Pisidien I, 1341 (same dies). CNG E-Auction 220 (2009), 318 (same dies) = M&M GmbH 16 (2005), 806 = Righetti Collection 5986. Extremely rare, apparently the third and best known example. Struck on an very broad and heavy flan and with an unusually detailed rendering of the cult statue of Artemis Pergaia. Light doubling on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

At 28.90 g, our coin is more than double the weight of the Righetti and 1.5 times the weight of the BM example, which gives it a remarkably medallic aspect.
