He was acclaimed emperor after a few days of anarchy following the death of Marius, but he lost Spain, which returned to Imperial control, and was faced with a revolt of the Aedui fostered by Claudius II. After a long siege of their stronghold of Autun, he destroyed the city in 270, thus gaining undisputed control of what remained of the Gallic Empire; but he lost his throne because he seems not to have been able to keep his hands off the wives of his officers! Many of the women seem not to have minded too much, but their husbands were not at all pleased and one finally murdered him late in 271. This coin is part of the extraordinary legionary series of Victorinus, which commemorated legions that were either based in the Gallic Empire or had detachments there: it honors one of the most important of his legions, the 30th Ulpia Victrix, based at Vetera, modern Xanten.
