Dynasts of Lykia, Kherei AR Stater
ANCIENT GREECE. DYNASTS OF LYKIA. Kherei.
Silver Stater, circa 410-390 BC. Telebehi (Telmessos).
Obv: head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with spiral palmette and olive leaves; TE (in Lycian) between neck guard and crest. Rev: bearded head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; TELEBEHIHE (in Lycian) to left, KHEREI (in Lycian) to right; all within incuse square.
About Extremely Fine; a terrific example of this visually arresting type, with an attractive old cabinet tone and backlit devices.
Issued by the Lycian dynast Kherei at Telebehi (modern Telmessos), this striking stater belongs to a fascinating period in the history of southwestern Anatolia, when Lycia was divided among powerful local rulers who acknowledged the authority of the Achaemenid Persian Empire while exercising considerable independence. Their coinage is among the most distinctive of the Classical world, frequently combining Greek artistic influence with native Lycian language and identity. Here, Athena and Herakles are accompanied not by Greek inscriptions but by legends in the Lycian script, naming both the city and Kherei himself, making the coin a striking expression of a culture that stood at the intersection of the Greek and Persian worlds.
