Gold Stater, circa 340-328 BC. Pella. In the name and types of Philip II. Obv: laureate head of Apollo right. Rev: charioteer driving racing biga right; trident below, ΦIΛIΠΠOY in exergue. Good Very Fine; ex mount, a few minor knocks, a beautifully classicising, sculptural portrait. The reverse depicts a victorious charioteer driving a racing biga, commemorating Philip II's triumph in the equestrian events at the Olympic Games. According to Plutarch, Philip regarded his Olympic victories as among his proudest achievements, using them to reinforce both his prestige and his pan-Hellenic legitimacy. By placing this celebrated success on his gold staters, Philip transformed a personal sporting triumph into one of the most enduring and recognisable images of Macedonian coinage, a design that continued to be struck long after his death under Alexander the Great and his successors.
