From the Eyeappealing Collection. Ex Heritage Auctions, Auction 231440 (2 October 2014), lot 61064.

Publius Aelius Hadrianus was born in AD 76, the son of a distinguished Spanish senator and related through his mother to the future Emperor Trajan, who took him into his household when Hadrian was nine years old. After Trajan's accession, Hadrian held a series of civilian posts, including a consulship in AD 108, and commanded legions during the Dacian and Parthian wars. Hadrian was not formally adopted until Trajan lay on his deathbed in August, AD 117; after succeeding to the throne, Hadrian abandoned many of Trajan's over-ambitious conquests and engaged in a policy of peace abroad and reform at home. He spent most of his 21-year reign traveling, visiting every province of the Roman Empire. Under his patronage, Roman art and sculpture reached its creative peak. Hadrian came to see himself as a "second Augustus," providing the empire with a new foundation as a vast commonwealth of nations under Rome's guiding hand. www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice

Ex Jesus Vico, Auction 158 (14 April 2021), lot 533.

Hadrian's reign was remarkable for the extent of his travels, as the emperor devoted much of his time to consolidating Rome's frontiers and strengthening the provinces rather than ruling from the capital. His tours through Britannia, the Danube, and the Greek East were commemorated in the celebrated "travel series" of coinage, which honored his adventus, provincial restorations, and the strength of Rome's legions. Judaea occupies a particularly significant place within this series: Hadrian's visit in AD 130 and subsequent plan to refound Jerusalem as Aelia Capitolina ignited the Bar Kokhba Revolt, a conflict that defined the closing years of his principate. While scholars have debated the exact date and purpose of the Judaean issues, they stand among the most evocative of the series. Most place the mintage within AD 134-138, marking both the emperor's presence in the province and his eventual return to Italy following the suppression of the rebellion. These rare issues endure as striking monuments to Hadrian's itinerant rule and the profound consequences of his policies across the empire. www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
