| Lot description: Ancients Zeno, Eastern Roman Empire (AD 474-491). AV solidus (21mm, 4.28 gm, 5h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 2/5, wrinkled, clipped, marks. Ravenna, AD 476-491. D N ZENO-PERP AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Zeno facing, head slightly right, spear over right shoulder, shield decorated with horseman motif in left / VICTORI-A AVGGG : , Victory standing facing, head left, long jeweled cross with horizonal crossbar in right hand; star in right field, COMOB in exergue. RIC X 3625. Also attributed to Odovacar. Rare type. From the Dr. Charles Jay Deur Collection, for the charitable benefit of Calvin University and Peace Lutheran Church of Hurst. Ex Classical Numismatic Group, Auction 47 (16 September 1998), lot 2085. "The first reaction of Odovacar to the restoration of Zeno was to persuade the Senate to send the western regalia of Constantinople, so that there should be no further separate emperors in the West. Only after some diplomatic exchanges whose outcome our sources do not record do the coins make it clear that there was a second period during which Nepos was recognized. We may therefore expect the first sole coinage in Zeno's name to antedate second reign issues of Nepos."
