Perhaps the greatest of the Greco-Bakrian kings, Eukratides Megas systematically defeated the other Baktrian rulers and annexed their realms, with the apparent exception of Menander I Soter, ruler of northern India. His classic image wearing a broad-brimmed helmet spread throughout the Hellenistic states far to the west, and he appears in historical records of the time by the second century AD historian Justin, who wrote "He was killed on his march by his son, with whom he had shared his throne, and who...far from concealing the murder...drove his chariot through his blood, and ordered his body to be cast out unburied." It is not known which of his three sons (Eukratides II, Plato, or Heliokles I) killed him.

BAKTRIA, Greco-Baktrian Kingdom. Eukratides I Megas. Circa 170-145 BC. AR Drachm (20.5mm, 4.18 g, 12h). Diademed and draped bust right / The Dioskouroi on horses rearing right, each holding palm frond and spear; monogram in lower right field; A in exergue. Bopearachchi 2D var. (A above horse); SNG ANS –; HGC 12, 135. Light iridescent toning. Near EF. Rare variety with the A in exergue.

Previously known coins of Eukratides I with the combined reverse monogram and Greek letter included a larger one with the letter Δ, and a smaller one with the letter A. In his 1991 catalog of the coins of Baktria, Bopearachchi hypothesized that these letters represented alphanumeric letters, indicating the denomination of that coin (pp. 66-72). Other known coins support this hypothesis: coins with the letter E being pentadrachms and the one with the Г a tridrachm. Including a previously misattributed tridrachm [see CNG E-409, lot 334]), these new issues help with understanding this coinage. The denominations occur across three controls, suggesting a broad minting of the type, rather than a special issue relegated to one or two mints. Why this system was instituted, and when it ceased (with the pentadrachms and tridrachms disappearing completely), is less clear and requires further study.
