Distyle temple with shield in pediment, enclosing half-length figure of Priapus left, holding kantharos and thyrsos; below, garlanded altar with Priapos standing left, between two amphorae. RPC IV.2 online -; SNG BN -; cf. CNG E-168, lot 108 (Septimius; for rev. type). Unique This coin provides the most precious and detailed depiction of the Temple of Priapus in Lampsacus, of which very few archaeological remains survive. Lampsacus was the main center of this cult, and from there it spread and flourished, particularly during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. According to the most common tradition, Priapus was the son of Dionysus and Aphrodite. It is said that he was born a horrible child, as a result of his mother's beauty and lust, which Hera wished to punish in an exemplary manner. Where he was worshipped, in the Hellespont, the animal offered to him was the donkey, which the Greeks regarded as a symbol of lust. Priapus was worshipped as the god of fertility, protector of gardens, vineyards, and male virility. The first fruits of the fields and gardens were also offered to him, along with libations of milk and honey. He was often depicted as a bearded man with a oversized phallus, a symbol of fertility, and holding a sickle to indicate his role as guardian of the gardens. Condition: Good fine. Weight: 11.08 g.
