| Lot description: JUDAEA, Procurators. Pontius Pilate. 26-36 CE. Æ Prutah (16mm, 2.00 g, 12h). In the name of Tiberius. Jerusalem mint. Dated RY 17 of Tiberius (30/1 CE). L IZ (date) within wreath / Lituus; c/m: branch flanked by ϛΠ within oval incuse. F&G type 2; Meshorer 333; Hendin 6371; RPC I 4968; Heritage 3032, lot 30284 (hammer $1,900). Earthen green patina, flan void. Coin and c/m: Near VF. Extremely rare with countermark. David Hendin notes on p. 284-285 of Guide to Biblical Coins, 6th edition, that this countermark was likely applied by the Cohors II Italica, the group of soldiers who perpetrated the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in 30-33 CE.
