| Lot description: PHRYGIA, Stectorium. Severus Alexander. AD 222-235. Æ (28.5mm, 12.51 g, 6h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from the front / King Mygdon, helmeted, standing facing, head right, holding spear and resting hand on grounded shield. RPC VI Online 5683.4 (this coin); BMC 11. Earthen green patina, some roughness. Near VF. Very rare. From the Dr. Mark Staal Collection. Ex Papillon 4 (19 December 2020), lot 343. Mygdon was a legendary king of Phrygia, ally to the Trojan King Priam in a war against the Amazons. Together with Otreus' forces, they battled the Achaean army at Troy. Priam mentions this battle to Helen of Troy in the Illiad: Ere now have I journeyed to the land of Phrygia, rich in vines, and there I saw in multitudes the Phrygian warriors, masters of glancing steeds, even the people of Otreus and godlike Mygdon, that were then encamped along the banks of Sangarius.
