| Lot description: PONTUS, Trapezus. Julia Domna. Augusta, AD 193-217. Æ (35mm, 21.13 g, 12h). Struck under Caracalla. Dated CY 153 (AD 216/7). IOYΛIA ΔOMNA AYΓ[OYCTA], draped bust right / TPAΠЄZONTIΩN, Mithras, radiate and wearing Phrygian cap, on horseback advancing right; to right, lighted altar; ЄT PNΓ (date) in exergue. Wojan, Trapézonte – (D51/R41 [Caracalla rev. die]); RG –; RPC V.3 Online 77300 var. (rev. scene var., J. Domna); cf. RPC V.3 Online 77288 (Caracalla). Green patina, minor marks, roughness. Good Fine. Unpublished and unique. This reverse die is shared with a coin of Caracalla. Mithras on horseback is a common theme in Trapezus but the reverse is typically depicted with a tree and attendants. This more basic type is only known for Septimius Severus, undated, and Caracalla, with which it shares a reverse die. The type returns again under Severus Alexander and his mother Julia Mamaea.
