| Lot description: KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 14.42 g, 10 h), struck under Philip III, Pella, circa 323/2-315. Laureate head of Zeus to left. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠ-ΠΟΥ Nude jockey on horse prancing to right, holding a long palm branch in his right hand and the reins with his left; below horse's raised left foreleg, bee to right. Gillet, Kunstfreund, 231 (this obverse die). Le Rider 434 (D230/R355). SNG ANS 429 = SNG Berry 110 (this obverse die). Extremely rare with a left-facing head of Zeus; struck from dies of very fine late Classical style . Reverse very slightly weakly struck, otherwise, good extremely fine. From a European collection, and from the personal collection of M. Savoca , Savoca 188, 17 December 2023, 6, ex Roma X, 27 September 2015, 299 and Roma VIII, 28 September 2014, 383. The left-facing Zeus tetradrachms of Philip III minted in Pella, are considered one of the greatest rarities of the Macedonian regal series. This one is from a series of tetradrachms that bear a head of Zeus that has a refined and noble late Classical elegance, equal to those from Olympia and Arcadian League of a generation earlier Once in a NGC holder # 4632815-002, graded AU 4/5, 4/5, "fine style".
