| Lot description: Roman Provincial, Phrygia, Aezani, Agrippina II Junior, AE Provincial bronze issue of Agrippina II the Younger, mother of Nero, struck at Aezani in Phrygia, belongs to the civic coinage of Asia Minor produced in the mid-1st century AD, during the period of her exceptional political prominence as Augusta under her son's reign. Aezani was an important local center, as confirmed by both its numismatic output and surviving epigraphic evidence. The obverse features a right-facing bust of Agrippina with the Greek legend ΑΓΡΙΠΠΙΝΑΝ ϹΕΒΑϹΤΗΝ, identifying her as Augusta. This titulature reflects her elevated status in the early years of Nero's rule (AD 54–59), when her influence within the imperial administration was clearly emphasized, including through both imperial and provincial coinage. The reverse depicts a right-facing bust of Persephone, accompanied by the legend ΑΙΖΑΝΙΤΩΝ, referring to the community of the citizens of Aezani as the issuing authority. Persephone, daughter of Demeter and closely associated with the cycles of vegetation and the underworld, held an important place in Greek religion and in local cult traditions of Asia Minor. Her appearance in the coinage of Phrygian cities is well attested and reflects the continued prominence of fertility and renewal symbolism in regional religious imagery. The combination of an imperial female portrait with a local deity exemplifies a standard pattern in provincial coinage, where expressions of loyalty to Roman authority were integrated with enduring regional religious traditions, forming a coherent and culturally layered visual program.
