| Lot description: TROAS, Alexandria Troas. Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ (19mm, 5.54 g, 6h). Bare head right / Two pontiffs driving team of oxen right, plowing pomerium. Burnett-Martin, p. 246, fig. 1; RPC I 1656; Dow, ACTTB, p. 218 (this coin). Dark green patina, slight roughness. Good VF. From the Joseph A. Dow Collection. Ex Richard Prideaux Collection of Augustus (Classical Numismatic Group 78, 14 May 2008), lot 1194. This coin type, with two drivers on the reverse, has long been attributed to an Uncertain (Philippi) mint. Burnett and Martin successfully argue for a reattribution to the city of Alexandria Troas based on hoard finds and local museum holdings, including 89 specimens in Çanakkale. Additional find spots include Philippi and Thasos indicating the coins circulated extensively throughout Thrace and Macedonia. The present coin is published in Joseph A. Dow, Ancient Coins Through the Bible (Mustang, OK: Tate, 2011), in the chapter Paul's Third Missionary Journey (AD 52–57).
