Augustus was born in 63 BC as Gaius Octavius, the grandnephew and posthumously adopted son of Julius Caesar. He formed the Second Triumvirate with Marc Antony and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, but eventually conflict arose from which he emerged as Rome's first true emperor. His reign saw the start of the Pax Romana, a golden era of peace, prosperity, and cultural flowering that lasted over two centuries.
