ROMAN IMPERATORIAL. Julius Caesar. February-March 44 B.C. AR denarius. 3.87 gm. 19 mm. Lifetime issue. Rome mint; P. Sepullius Macer, moneyer. His laureate and veiled head right; CAESAR DICT PERPETVO / Venus Victrix standing left, holding Victory and scepter; shield set on ground to right; P SEPVLLIVS MACER. CRI 107d. Crawford 480/13. Sydenham 1074. RSC 39. RBW 1685. Good Fine; lightly toned; a few small bankers' marks and light scratches; clear portrait and obverse legends on a broad flan of good metal. Clear and pleasing example of this rare and popular type.

Julius Caesar was born in 100 BC and was assassinated on the Ides (15th) of March, 44 BC, by patriotic citizens committed to the Republic and resisting his movement toward dictatorship. B. Woytek, Arma et Nummi, pp. 413-432, argues persuasively that all of Julius Caesar's portrait denarii of 44 BC were struck before his assassination that year.
