ROMAN IMPERATORIAL. Julius Caesar, as Dictator (49-44 BC). January-April 46 B.C. AR denarius. 3.76 gm. 18 mm. Uncertain mint (possibly Utica, North Africa). Head of Ceres right, wreathed with grain ears; [to l., COS·TERT downwards]; to r., DICT·ITER upwards / Emblems of the augurate and pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, guttus, and lituus; D (donativum = largess) to right; above, AVGVR; below, PONT·MAX. CRI 57. Crawford 467/1a. Sydenham 1023. RSC 4a. RBW 1637. Good Extremely Fine; deep cabinet tone; dramatic die break; fine style; sharply struck slightly off center on a broad flan. A beautiful piece. Issued just a few years before Caesar's assassination, this handsome and historic coin was struck to pay his successful legions after the battle of Thapsus on April 6th. Ceres symbolizes Africa and its wealth coming from grain.
