| Lot description: ROMAN IMPERATORIAL. Julius Caesar. Late 48-47 B.C. AR denarius. 3.81 gm. 17 mm. Military mint traveling with Caesar in North Africa. Diademed head of Venus right wearing necklace of pearls, hair rolled into chignon at back of head, some loose curls behind / Aeneas advancing left, head facing, holding palladium and bearing Anchises on his shoulder; to right, CAESAR downwards. CRI 55. Crawford 458/1. Sydenham 1013. RSC 12. RBW 1600. Good Very Fine; glossy surfaces, richly toned with lovely iridescence; well centered and sharply struck designs. This type was used by Caesar to associate himself with the goddess Venus and to the mythical founding of Rome. In antiquity, Aeneas was a prominent Trojan warrior who fled the fall of Troy carrying his father to safety, then went on an odyssey over the Mediterranean to Italy, where his descendants Romulus and Remus founded the city of Rome.
