Elephant advancing right, trampling on horned serpent; CAESAR in exergue / Emblems of the pontificate; simpulum, aspergillum, securis (axe, with wolf's head at the top), and apex. CRI 9. Julius Caesar's iconic "elephant coinage" was struck in great numbers beginning around the time he crossed the Rubicon in January 49. These denarii, struck from at least 750 obverse dies according to Crawford, were used to pay his armies during the civil war with Pompey (49-48 BC) They embody both religious authority and military might. Popular with collectors since the Renaissance, a large number are known to exist, but better examples like this one are very hard to find.
