| Lot description: 217-212 BC. Reduced series.. Luceria Aes Grave Quincunx Æ 34 mm, 39,57 g Luceria mint. Four wheel spokes on a raised disk / Four wheel spokes; ••••• (mark of value) above, L below; all on a raised disk. Good Very Fine Thurlow & Vecchi 281 (only 73 specimens recorded); Haeberlin pl. 71, 14-17; HN Italy 677a. Provenance: Ex Collection J. U. (acquired in the 1980s); later acquired from Gorny & Mosch. This Aes Grave quincunx belongs to the reduced bronze series struck at Luceria during the critical years of the Second Punic War (217–212 BC). As Rome faced the military threat of Hannibal after the disasters of Lake Trasimene and Cannae, the Roman monetary system underwent significant adjustments, including reductions in the weight standard of its heavy cast bronze coinage. Luceria, an important Roman stronghold in Apulia, served as a key military and logistical center in southern Italy. The wheel-spoke design used on this issue reflects the simplified symbolism typical of late Aes Grave coinage, produced during a transitional moment when Rome was gradually moving from heavy cast bronze to the more flexible struck coinage that would dominate later Roman currency.
