Lot description:

Bosporus, Panticapaeum. Time of Mithridates VI Eupator, ca.109-105 BC.. ; Bosporus, Panticapaeum. Time of Mithridates VI Eupator, ca.109-105 BC.; AE 14 Dichalkon, 2.40g. MacDonald-161, SNG BM-942. Obv. Tripod. Rx. Π-Α-Ν-Τ-Ι-Κ-Α-Π divided between star of eight rays, emanating from pellet in the center. Both the star and Apollo's tripod are symbols of Mithradates that appears on many of his issues. This issue is frequently found struck over coins of Panticapaeum issued just previously to Mithradates's intervention in the Bosporus, Apollo/Bow and Arrow (MacDonald-149) and Athena/Prow (MacDonald-150), as well as the Phanagoria issue Bearded Satyr/ Bow and Arrow (MacDonald-157). There are many, minor insignificant varieties resulting from inept die cutting, such as the legend retrograde or abbreviated. The type has also been reported in silver, but that needs authentication.

Ex coll. of Prof. David MacDonald, 2025.. VF
