| Lot description: ATTICA, Athens. Circa 165-42 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28.5mm, 17.48 g, 5h). Contemporary imitation of New Style coinage of magistrates Miki– and Theophra–. Struck after 137/6 BC. Helmeted head of Athena Parthenos right / Owl standing right, head facing, on amphora; magistrates' names in fields; to right, Nike driving fast quadriga right; [letter on amphora], AP below; all within wreath. Cf. Thompson 1366 (for similar imitation). For prototype: cf. Thompson 315g; cf. HGC 4, 1602. Dow, ACTTB, p. 85 (this coin). Toned, deposits, ex mount. VF. From the Joseph A. Dow Collection. While the present coin is undoubtedly ancient, numerous elements of the style are incompatible with the known dies for this series. The weight of the coin is also abnormally high. A similarly anomalous example was present in the Cretan Hoard examined by Thompson, which she placed under her imitative coins. The present coin is published in Joseph A. Dow, Ancient Coins Through the Bible (Mustang, OK: Tate, 2011), in the chapter The Greek Empire. CNG is pleased to offer coins from the collection of the author here, and in subsequent electronic auctions. Estimate: 200 USD |
