Lot description:

KINGS of MACEDON. Philip III Arrhidaios. 323-317 BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 4.21 g, 11h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Kolophon mint. Struck under Menander or Kleitos, circa 322-319 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; erasure mark in left field, ivy leaf below throne, spearhead to outer right. Price 1764 corr. (position of ivy leaf); Dow, ACTTB, p. 98 (this coin). Slight iridescent tone. EF.

From the Joseph A. Dow Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 70 (21 September 2005), lot 99.

This coin confirms the sequence of issues, Price 1763 followed by Price 1764, as it is evident that the ivy leaf was originally in the left field on the reverse die used here, then erased from the die and re-engraved below the throne.

The present coin is published in Joseph A. Dow, Ancient Coins Through the Bible (Mustang, OK: Tate, 2011), in the chapter The Greek Empire. CNG is pleased to offer coins from the collection of the author here, and in subsequent electronic auctions.

Estimate: 100 USD
