| Lot description: Islands off Caria. Kos circa 350-345 BC. Magistrate: Nestoridas. Tetradrachm AR 23 mm, 15,08 g Head of Herakles facing left, wearing the lion skin / ΚΩΙΟΝ / ΝΕΣΤΟΡΙΔΑΣ, crab; below, club; all within an incuse square. Extremely Fine SNG Aulock 2748; Pixodaros Hoard 21. This tetradrachm was struck on the island of Kos in the mid-4th century BC, a period of economic prosperity and political significance for the Carian islands. Kos occupied a strategic position in the southeastern Aegean, benefiting from maritime trade networks linking mainland Greece, Asia Minor, and the eastern Mediterranean. The Herakles head, a type widely associated with strength, legitimacy, and heroic virtue, reflects the influence of contemporary mainland and Anatolian iconography, while the crab on the reverse serves as a long-standing civic badge of Kos, alluding to the island's maritime character. The inclusion of the magistrate's name, Nestoridas, provides a precise chronological anchor and illustrates the organized civic administration behind Kos's silver coinage. Tetradrachms of this series are closely associated with the Pixodaros Hoard and represent a short-lived but artistically refined issue, prized for both their historical context and high classical style.
