Lot description:

Macedon, Kingdom of, Alexander III, (336-323 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.80 g), Aspendus Mint, posthumous issue year 31 = 182-1 B.C., obv. head of Herakles to right wearing lion skin with dotted border, rev. Zeus seated on throne to left, eagle in outstretched hand, SA/ MA in left field S reversed, MA as a monogram, to right ALEXANDRO[U], (cf.S.6713, Price 2913, BMC -, Muller -, Propontis hoard 100 [same dies]). Extremely fine/good very fine, minor roughness on reverse, and extremely rare, being probably the second known example.

Ex Anthony (Tony) Taylor Collection.

Noble Numismatics Sale 112, lot 3628. Previously Freeman & Sear from a hoard c.2002.

Price notes this date from the Propontis hoard which contained an example of this date. This was the last date of issue from this mint and is only known from this example and the Propontis hoard example. Propontis hoard 100 (published in RN 1979), illustrates the other known example coming from the same dies, but was noted by Price as possibly barbarous. However this being a better and clearer example confirms its authenticity as a product of the Aspendus mint.

Estimate: 1000 AUD

Lot description:

Macedon, Kingdom of, Alexander III, (336-323 B.C.), silver drachm, (4.28 g), Sardes Mint, struck under Menander, issued 324-323 B.C., obv. head of Herakles to right wearing lion skin with plain border, rev. Zeus seated on throne to left, eagle in outstretched hand, ALEXANDROU to right, no control marks, (cf.S.6730, Price -, ADM I Series X, 78a var (monogram below throne, same obv. die), CNG E-422, lot 84 [same dies]). Toned, extremely fine and extremely rare, apparently the second or third known of this issue.

Ex Anthony (Tony) Taylor Collection.

CNG Auction 429, lot 50.

It is possible that ADM I Series X, 78b is of this unmarked issue; the reverse controls on that coin are listed as "obscure", which may indicate that control marks were expected, but cannot be seen-possibly because none are present on that coin. Unfortunately, the piece is not illustrated in ADM, nor can it be found in Pella. (per CNG)
