Lot description: Dynasts of Lycia. Uncertain mint. Uncertain Dynast circa 470-440 BC. Stater AR 18 mm, 9,38 g Boar with lowered head, muscles taut, charging right in aggressive posture / Tortoise seen from above within a pelleted square border, all set in a deep incuse square. Very Fine Vismara 48; SNG Copenhagen suppl. 385-7; SNG von Aulock 4072-3; Dewing 2442. This silver stater from Lycia's proto-dynastic period reflects the region's unique iconographic language during a formative era of local rule, prior to standardized dynastic inscriptions. The obverse depicts a boar with lowered head in a charging stance-a dynamic motif found across Greek coinage, symbolizing strength, aggression, and heroic combat. The reverse features a tortoise framed within a pelleted square, a common Lycian emblem possibly linked to maritime identity or regional symbolism. Such coinage not only illustrates Lycian artistic expression but also the cultural syncretism of Asia Minor in the early Classical period. Starting price: 750 EUR | ![]() |
