Lot description: Islands off Caria. Kos circa 625-600 BC. Phokaic standard Sixth Stater or Hekte EL 10 mm, 2,65 g Crab / Incuse square. Good Very Fine. Well centred. Stefanaki Series I, 1–9 var. (unlisted dies); HN Online 1822; HGC 6, 1294. Kos, an important island off the coast of Caria, played a key role in early Aegean commerce and culture. This electrum hektē, struck circa 625–600 BC, belongs to one of the earliest series of coinage in the Greek world, adhering to the Phokaic standard. The crab motif, emblematic of the island, reflects Kos' maritime identity and its association with the sea, fertility, and Apollo-its principal deity. These early issues are rare and represent the island's participation in the pioneering phase of coinage in Asia Minor. Starting price: 2000 EUR | ![]() |
