ROMAN REPUBLICAN. L. Valerius Flaccus. 108-107 B.C. AR denarius. 3.96 gm. 19 mm. Rome mint. Draped and winged bust of Victory right, wearing pendant earring and necklace; star (mark of value) below chin (alternatively an XVI monogram) / Mars walking left, holding spear and trophy; apex (flamen's cap) to left, grain ear to right; L VALERI FLACCI. Crawford 306/1. Sydenham 565. RSC Valeria 11. Very Fine; lovely old tone with iridescence; fine style; well centered and struck; interesting obverse die break at hair tendril. Fine example of a difficult issue.

From the collection of José Truyol, the Swiss-Spanish coin dealer and former Swiss Guard at the Vatican, formed since the early 1970s.

This beautifully designed coin appears to celebrate three events in the Valeria family history: L. Valerius Flaccus' wins in the north of Iraly against the Gauls in 194 B.C.; the colonization of Placentia and Cremona in 190 B.C. (referred to by the cornstalk); and the appointment of L. Valerius Flaccus, the consul of 131 B.C., as flamen Martialis.
