Thessaly, Larissa, circa 400-380 BC. AR Drachm ( 19 mm, 6,08 g.). Head of the nymph Larissa three-quarter facing, turned slightly to left, wearing hair band. Rev. ΛΑΡΙ Horse with straight legs standing right, feeding on pile of hay. Lorber, 41 var. A fascinating obverse with a stunning portrait of the Nymph Larissa struck on a high relief with a perfectly defined details. An excellent grade of the metal giving a beauty only on the obverse. Struck from a rusty reverse die which obviously obstructs the visibility of the details on it. About good very fine. Rare type, especially with this magnificent style of the portrait, masterfully made from a very skillful ancient engraver.

ΛΑΡΙΣ / ΑΙΩΝ Horse crouching to right, preparing to roll; below the horse's belly, trident head downwards to right. BCD Thessaly II 322. Cf. Herrmann Pl. V, 14. Cf. HGC 4, 454 (but trident not noted). Lorber, Hoard, Group L-IV. A rare variety with the trident head on the reverse. Well-struck and attractively toned. About extremely fine.
