SYRIA. Seleukid Kingdom. Seleukos I Nikator, 312-281 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (17.08 gms), Susa Mint, ca. 300-295 B.C. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.
HGC-9, 20; SC-173.11. Obverse: Bust of hero (Alexander or Seleukos?) right, wearing Attic helmet covered with a panther skin and adorned with bull's ear and horns; Reverse: Nike standing right, placing wreath on top of a trophy of arms to her right; monogram to lower left; between Nike and trophy, ΔI. A beautiful Tetradrachm of this fabled type issued by Seleukos. The helmeted bust displays proudly with strong detail and an expressive face. The reverse is rather well-centered, allowing a complete reading of the king's name on the left. The coin is pale gray with an even tone and round flan, and lacks the scratches or graffiti so often seen on the issue. A great example that should please any collector seeking the type. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.

Estimate: $1200 - $2000

PONTOS. Kingdom of Pontos. Mithradates VI Eupator, 120-63 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (16.67 gms), Pergamon Mint, dated 11th month of BE 213 (August 84 B.C.). NGC Ch VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5.
Callataÿ p. 17 (D11/R3); RG p. 17; SNG Copenhagen -. Obverse: Diademed head right; Reverse: Stag grazing left; to left, star-in-crescent above monogram; to right, GIS (date) above monogram; IA (month) in exergue; all within Dionysiac wreath of ivy and fruit. This is a VERY RARE piece that represents the only example of the variety we have traced over the past two decades of public sales. It is pedigreed back to the 1928 Bithynia hoard where it was discovered among 54 silver tetradrachms of various types including 15 of Mithradates VI. Nicely preserved with pleasing cabinet tone and subtle hints of luster remaining on the reverse. A truly significant offering for the specialist.
