Lot description:
ATTICA. Athens. AR Tetradrachm (17.13 gms), ca. 454-404 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5.
HGC-4, 1597; Kroll-8; SNG Cop-31. Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right; Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent to left; all within incuse square. Always a popular type, this Athenian "Owl" Tetradrachm showcases a perfectly centered obverse strike, revealing a large portion of Athena's helmet crest and avoiding any loss to her nose or neck truncation. The reverse design is shown in its entirety within a deep-set incuse square, with only a hint of die shift on the letters of the abbreviated ethnic. Warm champagne-tinted tone complements the powerfully lustrous surfaces, making this an exemplary offering of the type.
