Lot description: GAUL. Massalia. Circa 275-225 BC. Drachm (Silver, 19 mm, 3.65 g, 2 h), Heavy Standard. Head of Artemis to right, wearing a wreath of olive branches, a triple-pendant earring and a pearl necklace. Rev. ΜΑΣΣΑ Lion walking to left on a double ground line, his tail curling over his left hind leg; below the lion, Ο. F/Py DRM-11-2. LT III, 788. Very rare, attractive and sharply struck; nicely toned and of fine style. Reverse struck slightly off-center, otherwise, extremely fine. From the Montecristo Collection, acquired from Credit de la bourse on 3 November 1990 and apparently from the stock of Jakob Hirsch, Hess-Leu [7], 16 April 1957, 6. The first drachms of Massalia, struck on the heavy standard, can be divided into two major groups: the rarer consists of pieces of fine style like this one, which are clearly copied from the heads of Arethusa by Euainetos and date to c. 275 BC. The second and larger group is composed of similar pieces with often unattractive heads of Artemis engraved by much less skilled workers (as DLT 794 ff.). While most of the fine style issues have a symbol in either the obverse of reverse field, this piece lacks one and is, thus, from the very first - prototype - issue of heavy drachms.
