Lot description: Coin, Macrianus, usurper, Antoninianus, 260-261, Samosata, EF(40-45), Silver Bust right to left, radiate, shoulder draped., Roma holding Victoria and a spear seated on shield to left., Usurper during the period known as the "thirty tyrants" (less than that would be known in reality and mainly by their coinage), Macrian is charged by Valerian of the supply of the army of the latter in his war against the Persians. Unfortunately for him, during this expedition Valerian is captured by the Sassanid king Chapur I. It would seem that on this occasion Macrian took the title of Augustus and made his two sons emperors. Macrian left one of his sons in the East and left for the West with the other, but they were arrested and killed in Illyria by a general of Gallien, Aureolus. Later, the latter usurped the title of emperor himself for a few months in 268 before being murdered by his own soldiers. The antoninianus we offer for sale is a witness of these few months of usurpation of the title of emperor by Macrian. We are not sure if this coinage is in the name of the father or the son, of Macrian the Younger. Unfortunately for him, during this expedition, Valerian is captured by the Sassanid king Chapur I. Malheureusement pour lui, lors de cette expédition, Valérien est capturé par le roi Sassanide Chapour Ier.
