M METTIVS Venus standing left, holding Victory advancing left on her outstretched right hand, scepter in her left and resting her left elbow on a shield on a globe at her side; in field to left, B. Babelon (Julia) 33, (Mettia) 5. Cohen 35. CRI 101. Crawford 480/17. Sydenham 1055. Hoge Collection. Toned and very rare. Porous surfaces, marks and some lacquering, otherwise, good fine. From the Robert Hoge collection, acquired from G.A Singer at the ANA coin show in June 2015. This issue was probably struck to fund the planned Parthian campaign of Caesar. Stiles was an Iowan banker who collected between 1920 and 1960 The obverse of this interesting coin depicts the submission of king Aretas III. Philhellenos of the Nabataeans.
