Julius Caesar, late February 44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18.5 mm, 3.32 g, 3 h), struck under the magistrate M. Mettius, Rome. CAESAR IMP Laureate head of Caesar to right; behind head, lituus and simpulum. Rev. M METTIVS Venus standing left, holding Victory advancing left on her outstretched right hand, scepter in her left and resting her left elbow on a shield on a globe at her side; in field to left, B. Babelon (Julia) 33, (Mettia) 5. Cohen 35. CRI 101. Crawford 480/17. Sydenham 1055. Hoge Collection. Toned and very rare. Porous surfaces, marks and some lacquering, otherwise, good fine.

This issue was probably struck to fund the planned Parthian campaign of Caesar.
