Lot description:

Julius Caesar and C. Clovius, 46-45 BC. Dupondius (Orichalcum, 29 mm, 16.62 g, 12 h), Rome (?). CAESAR DIC TER Bust of Victory to right; behind, star. Rev. C CLOVLI PRAEF Minerva advancing to left, holding trophy, spears and shield decorated with gorgoneion; at her feet to left, snake to left. Babelon (Julia) 17 and (Clovia) 11. Cohen 7. Crawford 476/1b. CRI 62a. RBW 1668. RPC 601. Hoge Collection. Green patina and rare. Small flan flaw on obverse edge; minor marks, otherwise, very fine.
From the Robert Hoge collection, acquired from Vauctions in 2011.

RPC lists this issue as coming from an "uncertain mint in northern Italy". However, the evidence for this is not convincing and we follow Woytek in placing it in Rome. (For a discussion of the evidence, see: Woytek, Arma, p. 271-274).
