Lot description: Caius Julius Caesar AR-Denarius (18.2 mm, 4.10 g, 12h). Rome mint, March-April 44 BC. Obv. Laureate head right; CAESAR downwards to right, IMPER upwards to left. Rev. Venus Victrix standing left, holding Victory in extended right hand and transverse scepter in left, resting her left elbow on shield set on celestial globe to right; D to left, M • METTIVS downwards to right. Babelon (Julia) 33, (Mettia) 5. Crawford 480/17. CRI 101. RBW 1686. Sydenham 1055. Rare, a very nice example with an exceptional portrait of Caesar.
