Lot description: Sextus Pompeius Fostlus AR-Denarius (18.8 mm, 4.01 g, 5h). Rome mint, 137 BC. Obv. Helmeted head of Roma to right; behind, jug; X below chin. Rev. SEX•PO FOSTLVS, below, ROMA, she-wolf standing right, head left, suckling Romulus and Remus; behind, shepherd and birds in a fig tree. Crawford 235/1c; Sydenham 461a; RSC Pompeia 1a; RBW 972. A exquisite specimen of this foundation myth type. Rare in this condition and exceptionally complete for the issue. Well centered and well struck, very lightly toned. EF.
