Between 286-282 BC, when this stater was struck, Lysimachos, one of Alexander the Great's former generals and among the most inextinguishable of the Succesors, was at the absolute height of his power, ruling over a vast territory that included Thrace, Macedon, and parts of Asia Minor. In 286, he had successfully ousted Demetrius I 'Poliorketes' from Macedon, establishing himself as king of both Macedon and Thrace, thereby consolidating his authority across a significant portion of Alexander's former empire. However, his later years were marked by increasing internal strife, namely the murder of his son Agathokles (said to have been instigated by his second wife, Arsinoe II) which led to familial discord and unrest within his court. This turmoil greatly weakened his rule, and in 282, Lysimachos faced a decisive challenge from Seleucus I 'Nikator'. The growing tension between these powerful successors culminated in the Battle of Corupedium in 281, where Lysimachos was defeated and killed, ending his reign and marking the final chapter in the bloody power struggles of Alexander's generals.
