CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS, Pantikapaion. Circa 90-79 BC. Æ (32.5mm, 18.27 g, 12h). Struck under Mithradates VI of Pontos. Head of Mên right, wearing laureate Phrygian cap [ornamented with star-in-crescent] / Dionysos standing left, holding grape bunch and thyrsos; to lower left, panther seated left, raising forepaw; monogram to right. Frolova & Ireland p. 19; Anokhin 1119; MacDonald 170; HGC 7, 109. Brown surfaces, flan preparation marks, flan flaws, overstruck on Pontic issue of Helmeted head of Athena / Perseus standing type (cf. HGC 7, 238 [Amisos], 260 [Chabakta], 269 [Kabeira], 279 [Komana], 286 [Laodikeia], 292 [Pharnakeia], 299 [Sarbanisa], or 302 [Taulara]). VF.
