Originally a general under Mithridates VI of Pontus, Asander played a crucial role in the tumultuous events that followed the fall of Mithridates. Around 47 BC, seizing an opportunity amid the chaos, he declared himself king of the Bosporan Kingdom after rebelling against Pharnaces II, Mithridates' son. Asander's reign can be characterised by military acumen and political shrewdness. Recognising the importance of aligning with Rome, the dominant force of the era, he forged an alliance that helped him secure his throne and maintain control over his kingdom. His rule, which spanned several decades, saw the Bosporan Kingdom grow in strength, a testament to his strategic vision. However, Asander's reign ended in tragedy. In 17, facing a rebellion led by the pretender Scribonius, Asander reportedly died from starvation - a stark contrast to the power and authority he once wielded. His death plunged the Bosporan Kingdom into a period of instability, only to be later stabilised by rulers with Roman support.
