CORINTHIA. Corinth. Circa 350-300 BC. Drachm (Silver, 14 mm, 2.32 g, 9 h), with the initial of the engraver D..... ϙ Pegasos flying to left, with a straight wing. Rev. Laureate head of Aphrodite to left, wearing a pendant earring, a pearl necklace, and with hair tied in a bun at the back; behind neck, monogram of ΧΑΡΟ; on Aphrodite's hair bun, small Δ. BCD Corinth, -. BMC 416 (but letter in hair unrecorded if present). Very rare. Beautifully toned and attractive. Extremely fine.
From a collection in the Suisse Romande and from a French collection formed in the early 1970s, Parsy, 7 April 2022, 29, ex Münzhandlung Basel 8, 22 March 1937, 312.
At first glance this appears to be an attractive late drachm from Corinth (BCD dates them all to the 4th century, but couldn't some of them be a bit later?), but it becomes extraordinary when looked at carefully: there is a tiny Δ that is almost hidden within Aphrodite's hair! Quite obviously, this is not a magistrate's initial (there's a monogram in the field) so it must be that of the engraver! In fact, what immediately comes to mind is the equally tiny Δ that appears on Ptolemaic coins, which is hidden in much the same way. Admittedly, our Δ is not quite up to the standard of the Alexandrian one, but he did produce a very attractive head of Aphrodite!!
