Lot description: The Jonathan H. Kagan Collection of Ancient Greek Coins IONIA. Uncertain mint. Circa 600-550 BC. 1/48 Stater (Electrum, 5 mm, 0.35 g). Fibula ornamented with two single and three double spacers on the bow, and two pellets on the catch plate. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Rosen 345. SNG Berry 1020. Cf. SNG Kayhan 1556 (1/24 stater). Very rare. Well-centered, well-struck and nicely toned. Extremely fine. From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan, ex Peus 372, 30 Oct 2002, 485. The brooch shown on this coin is an example of what is known as a Phrygian Bow Fibula, of which there are numerous preserved examples dating from the 8th to the 6th century BC.
