Lot description: The Jonathan H. Kagan Collection of Ancient Greek Coins KINGS OF MACEDON. Perdikkas II, 451-413 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 16 mm, 2.46 g, 9 h), Aigai(?). Horseman, wearing kausia, riding horse to right, holding the reins with his right hand and two spears with his left; below, small dog trotting along to right. Rev. Forepart of a lion at bay to right; above, kerykeion to right; all within an incuse square. HGC 3.1, 791. Raymond 200. SNG Copenhagen 500. Rare and endearing with the little dog. Slightly porous and with some striking flatness on the reverse, otherwise, very fine. From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan. Normally we think of this scene as showing us the start of a hunt, especially since the rider is wearing a short tunic and is carrying two spears. In that case, the little dog with the curled tail who seems to be moving along below the horse would be a hunting dog, but so small? Could he actually be a pet going along for the walk?
