Rather porous surfaces, otherwise, very fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan, ex Gemini II, 1 January 2006, 88 and Aretusa 2, 13 May 1994, 135.

This coin relates to the revolt of Potidaia against Athens, which was, according to Thucydides, one of the causes of the Peloponnesian War. With this issue Potidaia emphasised her relationship to her mother-city, Corinth, in defiance to Athens and the Delian League.

MACEDON. Mende. Circa 460-423 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.29 g, 12 h). Dionysos, bearded, with his head to left, wearing an ivy wreath and a chiton, reclining to right on the back of a donkey walking to right, holding a kantharos with his right hand and resting his left on the donkey's side; to right, crow perched on an ivy plant to right; under the donkey, small dog standing to right. Rev. ΜΕΝ-ΔΑ-Ι-ΟΝ Vine with five bunches of grapes; all within incuse square. Jameson 1956. Kagan, Notes, pl. 2, 8 (this coin). Noe, Mende 78. SNG ANS 342. SNG Spencer Churchill 123 (this coin). A rare variety with attractive dark toning. Minor striking flatness on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan, ex Sternberg & Apparuti XIX, 18 November 1987, 125.

This is a rather endearing coin. Not only do both the god and the donkey have pleasant expressions, but the little dog standing below seems to be calmly enjoying everything too. He is clearly an ancient version of the modern-day Pomeranian or Sptiz, but he is probably more than just a simple symbol. As Kagan points out, p. 4 and n. 9, not only does this little dog appear a small number of other dies at Mende (Noe 77-80) but he also turns up on rare contemporary octodrachms of Alexander I (could Prof. J. Kroll's suggestion - see n. 9, cited above - that the dog was the symbol of a travelling die engraver be correct?). Of course a link to Perdikkas II tetrobols (like lot 1142) is certainly preferable and more rational.

ELIS. Olympia. Circa 450-430 BC. Stater (Silver, 27 mm, 11.34 g, 10 h). Eagle flying right with his wings above and below his body, grasping coiling serpent in his talons and with his beak; above to right, cointermark of a bird in a circular indent; on the lower right, uncertain countermark in a shaped indent (a bear?, an eagle head?); at the lower center, on the eagle's wing, countermark of a bear walking to left in a shaped indent. Rev. F-A Nike running to left, holding a wreath in her outstretched right hand and, with her left, holding her chlamys at her waist; all within a shallow incuse square. BCD Olympia 37 = Seltman Temple, 77c (AS/βκ) = Weber 4015 = H. Weber, On some Unpublished or Rare Greek Coins, NC, 1892, 14 (this coin). HGC 5, 307. Very rare, with very well designed types, toned, and with a storied provenance going back to the thrilling days of yesteryear. Somewhat porous, otherwise, good fine.

From the Collections of Jonathan H. Kagan and that of BCD, Leu Numismatics 90, 10 May 2004, 37, ex Bourgey, 2 July 1964, 74, and from the collections of Comte Chandon de Briailles, Bourgey, 17 June 1959, 378 and Sir Herman Weber, Naville IV, 17 June 1922, 580, originally acquired from Spink in 1891.

As with so many coins from Olympia, this coin was used over quite a long period of time. It only had its full value in Olympia, but since coins like this were taken home as a form of monetary souvenir they had to be validated for continued circulation by countermarks. While two of the countermarks here are of uncertain origin, the third, with a prowling bear, is the badge of the Arkadian city of Mantineia.

CYPRUS. Uncertain mint. Circa 480 BC. Stater (Silver, 22 mm, 11.04 g, 12 h). 'go' or 'ko' (in Cypriot script) Lion at bay right. Rev. 'go' or 'ko' (in Cypriot script) Bull standing left; all within dotted border in shallow incuse square. BMC p. xlv, §25b = p. 69, 2 and pl. XIII, 6 and pl. XXV, 9 same dies. Weber 7740 (same reverse die). Extremely rare. Clear. Slightly flat struck from worn dies. Very fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan, acquired from Harlan J. Berk.

This issue was often attributed to the obscure city of Golgi in the past, based entirely on the Cypriot syllabic letter 'go' or 'ko', which was thought to represent the initial of the city's name. More recent work has pretty much disproved this assumption, but, as usual, hasn't replaced it with anything better!
