Lot description: Ancients Q. Cassius Longinus (ca. 55 BC). AR denarius (18mm, 6h) NGC XF★, Fine Style. Rome. Q•CASSIVS-VEST, diademed, veiled head of Vesta right / Curule chair within temple of Vesta, shown as a circular edifice with a domed roof surmounted by statue of Vesta standing facing, head left, decorated with griffin heads on dome base, supported by six columns; urn in left field, raised tablet inscribed A C (Absolvo Condomno) in right field. Crawford 428/1. Sydenham 916. Cassia 7. A wonderful specimen, its backlit luster illuminates the piece, while its slight charcoal toning adds a touch of sophisticated depth. As on Crawford 413/1 of L. Cassius Longinus, the obverse/reverse combination on this issue refers to the Trial of the Vestal Virgins in 113 BC, presided over by the moneyer's ancestor, L. Cassius Longinus Ravilla. https://coins.ha.com/itm/ancients/roman-republic/ancients-q-cassius-longinus-ca-55-bc-ar-denarius-18mm-6h-ngc-xfand-9733-fine-style/a/61375-25183.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-61375-05202024 HID02906262019 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved |
